Two grooms in kilts in front of Hackney Town Hall

Ryan and Marcus, Hackney Town Hall, London

When Ryan and Marcus first landed in my inbox, I got immediately excited! They wanted a celebrant ceremony at Hackney Town Hall, a venue that had been on my bucket list for years. But as the messages between us started to fly back and forth, my excitement grew…

Their wedding fell on London’s pride weekend and they wanted to make it an absolute riot of camp – a Madonna entrance (choreographed to perfection!), girl band quotes, a tribute to their very own accidental “gay men’s cat adoption agency”! It was glorious.

Here’s a little taster from their ceremony:

“Now, as I’m sure you know, Marcus and Ryan absolutely love going to gigs together. The list of acts they’ve seen is a who’s who of icons – Beyonce, Britney, Madonna, Kylie, Girls Aloud… So in many ways it’s not surprising that Marcus ended up spontaneously proposing at a festival. He’d agonised over how to pop the question. In the end, the mood struck him when Sugababes were midway through singing the aptly titled “Caught In A Moment”. Marcus naively thought he could do it without anyone really noticing but of course, the girls and gays went absolutely wild! The next day, it all felt like a fuzzy… and ever so slightly hungover dream. Had the heady mix of over-priced beer and naughties pop music got the better of them? But no. They went for a lovely walk, they chatted and they both agreed they really were ready. And so here we all are!

I asked them what the future holds. They definitely want to travel more. Not backpacking. God no! We’re talking first class airport lounges and luxury spa hotels. But having been to America, Italy, Portugal, Cyprus and Barcelona, they’ve got a taste for boujee adventure. And where will I find them when they’re old and wrinkly? Well, their answer was exactly as you’d expect; watching Girls Aloud on YouTube in their gay retirement village, surrounded by even more cats!”

Choosing Laura as our celebrant was one of the best decisions we made at our wedding. Pretty much every guest of ours commented on how amazing she was and that it felt like she had been friends with us for years.

From our initial coffee which just felt like a chat with a really good friend, through to when we received our first draft script, which we barely had to edit (and we are quite pernickety), Laura just got us and what we were about.

On the big day, Laura was a calming influence who offered advice and reassurance. She took time to speak with both my husband and I to make sure we were ok, and when the time came to walk down that aisle, seeing her friendly face at the end waiting for us, was a total comfort which we will remember forever.

We cannot recommend her highly enough. Our guests loved her and we loved her. Book her, the best day of your life will be made even sweeter having Laura at your side.

Why I Love Weddings at Hackney Town Hall

Hackney Town Hall is one of London’s most distinctive wedding venues. And yes, by nature of it being council owned, it tends to be considered registrar territory. But it doesn’t have to be!

The stunning glass atrium creates a light-filled setting that feels like being outdoors but with none of the worry about the Great British weather! And it manages to be a modern, blank canvas without being devoid of personality. It’s just got great bones.
